Feed Lake Highlands (FLH) serves the Lake Highlands Community by feeding the body, mind, and spirit of its residents. We focus specifically on those who live on fixed, limited, and low incomes.
We believe that hunger is a community problem and requires a community solution. We partner with the North Texas Food Bank, Lake Highlands United Methodist Church, Sharing Life Community Outreach, the Lake Highlands YMCA, and our neighbors to fight hunger and feed hope to those who are struggling with poverty and hunger on many levels.
Feeding the Body
Food insecurity has a ripple effect in our community, the effects of which are felt well beyond the person experiencing pangs of hunger. A hungry child is more susceptible to illness and, therefore, misses more school and learns at a slower pace. Increased illness and mental lethargy or distraction due to hunger impact the entire classroom and, in the end, all students are affected.
The food distribution program provides supplemental groceries to registered clients on a monthly basis. As of April 2017, we serve 126 households (380 individuals) and provide them 22 pounds of healthy food per person monthly.
In partnership with the Lake Highlands YMCA, we host healthy lifestyle classes called Get Up and Go for children identified as pre-diabetic by a doctor.
Feeding the Mind
The Homework Club serves at-risk students from first through sixth grades. With the help of our volunteers, students work to improve their basic reading and math skills. We currently tutor and mentor 25 students from Skyview, Thurgood Marshall, and Wallace elementary schools during the school year.
Feeding the Spirit
FLH was born from a ministry of Lake Highlands United Methodist Church. Clients of our programs receive information about The New Room Fellowship: an Outreach Ministry of LHUMC.
We offer two summer camp experiences to children and youth involved with our programs. A week at Kids Across America (KAA), or Pine Cove Camp in the City offers a safe place that empowers children living in difficult circumstances to experience love and learn more about themselves.
