We expected to see Homewood and Khao Noodle Shop. But the list has some surprises, too.

In a list of Texas’ best new restaurants that opened last year, Texas Monthly restaurant critic Patricia Sharpe worked in a healthy serving of North Texas restaurants: three restaurants in Dallas and one in Fort Worth in the top 10, and two more D-FW spots as honorable mentions.
Sharpe, who has penned the list for 19 years, included Khao Noodle Shop on her latest list, at No. 8 out of 10. The tiny Laotian restaurant was already getting national attention after Bon Appetit praised it as the No. 2 best new restaurant in America (and named Dallas as its 2019 Restaurant City of the Year).
So whether Khao Noodle Shop is No. 2 in the country or No. 8 in Texas, seems like you should get there if you haven’t yet. The Dallas Morning News re-profiled Khao Noodle Shop last week, checking in on how it’s surviving all that attention.
The top Dallas spot on Sharpe’s list, at No. 4, is chef Matt McCallister’s restaurant Homewood, near Highland Park. We called it Dallas’ most anticipated restaurant of 2019, then our critic gave it a rare four-star restaurant review. Sharpe zeroed in on the thing most Dallasites have said about Homewood: You’ve gotta get those Parker House rolls served with parmesan mornay and chicken drippings. When compared to McCallister’s last restaurant, FT33, Homewood let go of “complex tweezer cuisine,” as the Texas Monthly article calls it, in favor of good food without the pretense.
