Things To Know When Buying Homeowners Insurance

WILL THIS POLICY PAY THE FULL COST TO REPAIR MY ROOF?

Some policies pay up to the full cost to repair your roof. This is called replacement cost coverage. Some policies pay less if the roof is older or showing wear. Some companies add a payment schedule endorsement for your roof. This will not pay full replacement cost. Ask how your roof is covered.

HOW MUCH IS MY DEDUCTIBLE?

A deductible is an amount you must pay before your company pays. Ask your agent if the deductible for wind and hail damage is different than the deductible for other types of damages. If it is, you might pay more out-of-pocket if your house is damaged in a storm.

WATER BACKUP COVERAGE

Homeowners policies typically exclude loss resulting from water or waterborne material which backs up

through sewers or drains (i.e. toilet overflow) or which overflows/discharges from a sump pump or related

equipment. Most carriers allow you to purchase an endorsement that allows you to purchase typically $5k to $50k of coverage, but the deductible is typically less than your normal deductible.

SERVICE LINE COVERAGE

Service line coverage is a type of insurance that reimburses you for damage to utility lines that you’re responsible for as the homeowner. In the event of a line or pipe leak or break or rupture, service line coverage will generally cover the costs of repairing or replacing the line as well as the excavation and landscape restoration after necessary repairs are complete.
